Well, lots of nominees for this award, names like Domenico Morfeo,Andres Guly, Luigi Di Biagio, Fransesco Coco, Alvaro Recoba and Stephane Dalmat spring to my mind. But who was the player that dissapointed Us Nerazzurri faithfull the most this season?
Domenico Morfeo had great careers at Cagliari and Atalanta, and a relatively good time at the Viola. He was signed on a free in the summer from Fiorentina, who had their own financial worries. Morfeo started well as he assisted a goal for New comer Carlos Gamarra in the friendly match with Roma in the San Siro. Then he assisted INTER's second goal in the CL Qualifiers at home to Sporting Lisbon [Recoba scored from a header]. Morfeo was always regareded as an offensive midfielder, yet Cuper, who loves to use his classical 4-4-2 Module, Played Morfeo as a left winger, a position that he wasn't used to. Maybe the 2 highlights of Morfeo's season were his goals at the Olimpico Vs Roma [2-2] and his early goal in the 4-1 drubbing of Newcastle United at St James's, Other than that he had a terrible season.
Remember his missed penalty at the Bay Arena?? that could have proved costly but Barca and then Emre made our passage to the last 8 safe. Also No INTER Fan can forget the home game with Roma, when Morfeo was the direct reason behind Montella's equalizer. But Is Domenico Our worst palyer or just he was a victim of Cuper's tactics? In My opinion he is a better player than what he has shown at the Black and Blue. Parma have already signed him for 2 years and we will have to wait and see how will he fit in the 4-3-3 Module that Prandelli uses, behind the likes of Mutu and Adriano. so Morfeo isn't our worst player this season.
Another strong nominee is Andres Guly..who actually WON The scudetto with Milan in 98-99! he suffered this year from an injury, but even when he was 100% fit he never looked impressive. Although being a versatile player who plays on both flanks, which is something a coach loves, yet he never proved his worth and looked akward when he was on the pitch. Is he our worst player?? NO, Because simply he is not a starter and INTER Fans did not expect much from the argentine.
Luigi Di Biagio...well I Think that all INTER fans think that he lost it and he cannot run nor win balls anymore. In My opinion, he was troubled with the injuries to Almeyda,Beati and Cristiano Zanetti a lot. Di Bi had to play for the whole season, and at that age you just cannot give 100% every match. so he is a victim to his colleagues injuries, not more or less. ONE Of our worst players but not THE Worst. At least he actually tries to do his best and has an INTER Heart, add to that, he scored some goals this season.
Fransesco Coco, whom we swapped with Clarence Seedorf in the summer. Coco was regarded as our saviour at the Left Back slot, after suffering form Vratislav Gresko in the dramatic scudetto loss at Rome. No one can deny his presence as a player, who played for the likes of AC Milan and Barcelona, and played for the italian National Team on many occassions. Coco, Like most of INTER's squad, suffered from Injuries this season, he even fell a victim to injury TWICE This season!! So by all means i do not consider him the worst, well when he played he did not exactly fullfill our expectations but still we have Hope in Coco having a better, Injury free season. His abcsence did not affect as much as young Primavera talent Giovanni Pasquale was there to fill the gap left by Coco.
Another extremly hot prospect is Stephane Dalmat, who like Coco, was rocked by injuries. who can forget his amazing game at home to Barcelona?? he continued to give De Boer and Puyol a hard time untill he came out injured..What a pitty. When he actually started to be one of our best players. His Shots and Pace are from another world. His Technique as he is very much able to take on defenders. He did apologise for the Nerazzurri fans for his terrible season, and he said that we Only have seen 50% of the real Dalmat. Yet, not Our Worst player of the season because of the circumstances that surrounded his injury.
EL CHINO..One of the fan's favourites, brilliant at times and down to earth at others. Alvaro Recoba kept blabbing all year about his favoured position on the pitch, which was the role of the second striker, Cuper used him for most parts of the season as a left winger, and clearly Recoba wasn't happy with this role. He had his moments, when he scored that Brilliant curler at Como, when he scored from a great Free Kick at Bologna and even won us that match with a Lob when the game was heading for a draw. Also his Goal in the 3-3 Draw with Roma!!! a piece of Art to say the least. but when it realy counted, in the CL Derby, he was not present at all at the 2 games!! when the Scudetto was already within footsteps of Juve, The CL Was INTER's last chance of silverware this season. Christian Vieri was injured so he missed both games, so INTER's fans had their hopes on Recoba to kill our Arch Rivals hopes and make the trip to Manchester. In The first game Recoba squandered 2 golden oppurtunities, in the second match he was even more dissapointing and was no where to be seen. INTER Only began to click when The african duet of Kallon-Martins came in!! So, Alvaro Recoba is by far Our worst player of the season. He has talent,Pace,Technique and flair, yet if he had the brains, consistency and commitment like IL Capitano or Emre, maybe he could one day win the Golden Ball!
